Q: What is the IELTS?
A: IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. Conducting 2 million tests in the past year, IELTS is the world's most popular high stakes English-language test for study, work and migration.
Q: Should I take the Academic or General Training test?
A: Choose the Academic test if you plan to pursue higher education at an English-speaking institution (community colleges, undergraduate, and graduate schools). Choose the General test if you are going to an English-speaking country for secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand must sit for the General Training test.
Q: What is the IELTS test format and how long will it take?
A: IELTS has four parts – Listening (40 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total IELTS test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. The speaking exam is given on Saturday and will be scheduled between 12:40 to 6:30pm. If you need an early speaking test time, please contact the IELTS administrator before the exam to make arrangements.
If you have any questions about the tests, please feel free to contact ELC.

Q: Can I cancel or postpone my IELTS test?

If you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the IELTS test date, you will receive a refund minus the administrative cost. You must contact their IELTS Administrator to process your cancellation or postponement.
Q: Where/How do I sign up to take the IELTS test?
The IELTS test registration deadline is typically 2 weeks before the IELTS test date, so we recommend you try to book your IELTS test at least 1–2 months in advance.
Q: I registered for the exam online. How long before I can receive my confirmation?
A: Once payment and passport copies have been submitted, most confirmations take place between 1-3 business days.
Q: But I registered online today for an IELTS test tomorrow! Will I receive a confirmation?
A: If you register for an IELTS test that takes place within 5 calendar days, you MUST PAY AND SUBMIT YOUR ID IMMEDIATELY. Any delay in payment or receiving your ID will result in your application being rejected.
Q: I’m having trouble registering online. Can I fill in a paper application?
A: ELC Boston/LA is no longer accepting paper applications. If you are having trouble registering online, please contact the IELTS Administrator.
Q: I accidentally registered at another school! Can you transfer me?
A: ELC cannot transfer you from one school to another. If you are registered at another school, you need to contact that school directly.
Q: I can’t get my photo uploaded to the website. What should I do?
A: We will take your photo the day of the exam, so you can leave it blank.
Q: I want to register for a specific test day, but the date does not show up on the website. What should I do?
A: If the IELTS test day that you want is not available, it means that we do not offer an IELTS test that day or the IELTS test is full. In both cases, we are unable to register you.
Q: What will I need to bring with me to the IELTS test site on my IELTS test day?
A: You must bring the passport/national identity card you used on the IELTS Application Form to the IELTS test. You can also bring a clear water bottle with the label removed. Phones, bags, pens, pencils and other personal belongings will not be allowed in the examination room and will be held in a secure area at the test site.
Q: When do I arrive for the test?
A: The test center will open at 8:00AM for check-in. The doors will close promptly at 8:45AM. Latecomers will not be allowed into the test center.
Q: When is my speaking test?
A: Speaking tests will held in the afternoon on the same day between 12:40PM-6:00PM. You will be assigned a 20-minute slot, determined at random. You are expected to keep the afternoon open for your speaking test. If special accommodations are needed, please contact the IELTS Administrator directly to request a specific time.
Q: When will I receive my IELTS test results?
A: 13 calendar days after the IELTS test date, on the second Friday after the exam. Results can be received in 2 ways: mailed to your US home address or picked up in person at ELC. On the day of the IELTS test, you will be given an envelope to write your desired shipping address, or you can put your name on a list to pick up you results in person. Students will need their passport to pick-up their results. An ID will not be sufficient. Test results CANNOT be released by phone, email or fax.
Q:. My IELTS test results are delayed - why?
A: IELTS test results are released on the 13th day after the exam on a Friday. There are 3 ways to get your scores:
Q: Why can’t I see my results online?
A: Usually because of these reasons:
Q: How were my IELTS test results sent to me?
A: They are sent via USPS and can take between 3-7 business days. No tracking number is provided. Overnight delivery is available through FedEx for a $25 fee, and 2-day shipping for a $16 fee. A tracking number will be provided. Expedited international shipping is available through DHL for a $75 fee. A tracking number will be provided.
Q: It’s been over a week and I still haven’t received my results. What happened?
A: We will always notify you if your IELTS test results are going to be delayed. If you haven’t received your results in 3-5 business days, you can email your IELTS administrator.
Common problems:
Q: My IELTS test results were withheld, why?
A: Your results may have been withheld for a variety of reasons.
Q: How can I get a SACM/formal receipt for my exam?
A: Yes. If you pay for the exam at the test center, you will be asked to fill out a credit card authorization form. You can use that form as your official receipt. If you pay for the exam online, you will receive a confirmation email regarding your payment. Save that email as a PDF and that will serve as your official receipt.
Q: I would like to have a copy of my IELTS test results sent to an University/College but I did not select one while I was signing up for the IELTS test. How can I request this now?
A: You are able to send your IELTS test results to up to 5 institutions for free (all additional ones are $35). Notify the IELTS Administrator via email as soon as you want to send your IELTS test results. You must provide the complete address.
Q: How can I add my name to a waiting-list for an earlier IELTS test date?
A: You can notify the IELTS test Administrator that you are interested, but there are no guarantees. The IELTS test Administrator cannot delete or add anyone if there is not space, and the IELTS test Administrator cannot manually register you.
Q: Can I have another student take the IELTS test in my place? What is the process for that?
A: If you would like to give your IELTS test seat to another individual or someone wants to give you their IELTS test seat and payment, you need to contact the IELTS Administrator directly. IELTS Administrators will do everything they can to accommodate your request, but in many cases we cannot transfer the IELTS test over.
Q: Why can I see IELTS test dates in the past?
A: IELTS uses the international date system of dd/mm/yyyy.
Q: I disagree with my IELTS test results and want to have them rechecked. What should I do?
A: You can fill out an Enquiry on Results (EOR) form (available from the IELTS Administrator). The charge is $200 and it can take up to 6 weeks. Here is more information on EORs: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/find-out-about-results/questions-about-your-ielts-results
