Raed Alburaidi – Student Spotlight June 19th, 2019

Raed Alburaidi is from Saudi Arabia, and studied at ELC Santa Barbara for 14 weeks in our Semi-Intensive Program. Raed was always quick with a witty comment that would bring lots of laughter to the ELC halls! He led the charge for many fun student activities, and made friends instantly. We will miss having Raed with us in Santa Barbara! Read on to learn more about him:

Where were you born and raised? Give us a mental picture of the place(s).

I was born and raised in a small city called Buraydah. It is a small city in the middle of Saudi Arabia

What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?

Usually, I hang out with my friends either in a shopping center or a park

What is your special talent?

I don’t have one 🙁

Actually, I am good in math and quite a good soccer player

What is your profession? What do you like about it?

I am a student.

Tell us about your family, do you have kids? Siblings? Do they live close to you?

Hmmm, my family. I have a big family consisting of four sisters and a brother.

Do I have kids? Yes, I have two daughters. Just kidding! 🙂

Yes, we’re very close to each other.

Why did you choose to study English in Santa Barbara? Did you consider other options?

Actually, I planned to study in Delaware because two of my cousins are studying there but I changed my mind.

What are all the ways that Santa Barbara is different than your city/town?

The culture, and Santa Barbara is much smaller than my city.

What were you most surprised to learn about the US or Santa Barbara? Did you experience any culture shock?

Maybe the food culture here.

What do you miss most about your country?

First of all, the food. And, of course, my family and friends

What are your top three favorite places in Santa Barbara?

The Habit Burger

Where have you found the best food from your country in Santa Barbara?

I haven’t, unfortunately

What are some tips you have for people who want to learn English?

Try to communicate with local citizens

What are your plans after ELC?

I hope I will be accepted at Stanford or MIT universities. If I am accepted I will study for my BS here in the US.
