Student Spotlight – Rika Shimizu! May 19th, 2017

Rika has been at ELC for little over 6 months and we will be very sad when she leaves at the end of this month. RIka is the student to ask when you want a good recommendations for great food near the school and Sawtelle. Not only does she like to explore and go out, she loves to study! Read on below to learn more about her!

Where were you born and raised?

In Japan, Yamanashi. It is next to Tokyo.

Why are you studying English in Los Angeles?

I wanted to sing American music with English lyrics, and I wanted to learn about American culture. LA has been made with different cultures from people from different countries, and it is very different from where I come from, Japan. Japan has only Japanese culture.

Is this your first time in the US?

Yes is was.

What were you surprised to learn about the US or LA? Did you experience culture shock?

Everything was different. I could understand English a little bit, but I could not express or respond back to people. In my opinion, Japan has better public transportation. It was weird to see sales representatives in shops talking to each other. In Japan, co-workers at shopping centers cannot talk with each other.

What do you do for fun? Hobbies?

Singing!!! I used to go to Karaoke a lot back at home. I love to socialize with friends too.

Tips for people who want to learn English:

Don’t be shy to speak English. Be open-minded.

Favorite place in LA:

ELC!!! All the teachers and staff are very friendly.
I like the beach!!!

Favorite type of food:

Anything but American food.

Favorite moment in class at ELC:

When I moved up from 500B to 600!!!! I can now apply to colleges! When we discuss something funny in class and we all laugh.

Plans after ELC:

I am going to college to study Psychology. After graduating from college, I hope to work in the US for one year before I head back to Japan!
