The IELTS test has grown in popularity over the years as an official exam to prove English language skills, particularly for study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. The IELTS test consists of four sections (or “papers”): Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. There are two modules for the IELTS test - academic and general training. The Listening and Speaking is the same for both modules of the IELTS test, but the Reading and Writing papers are different.
- The IELTS Academic Writing paper asks the candidate to describe visual information in the their own words and also requires the candidate to discuss a point of view, argument, or problem. The candidate’s score is based on various assessment criteria with candidates being asked to write a specific number of words on the answer sheet supplied.
- The IELTS Academic Reading paper supplies the candidate with three texts and a variety of question types. The topics generally apply to students at the undergraduate/postgraduate level. The candidate must transfer the answers to the answer sheet during the time allotted for the exam. The candidate’s final score is a band score between 1-9.
- The IELTS Listening paper has four sections, with ten questions in each section. The sections deal with everyday social situations as well as education and training situations. Candidates write their answers on the answer sheet during the last ten minutes of the exam.
- The IELTS Speaking paper includes a face-to-face interview between the candidate and examiner.
Each paper is broken down by time; 30 minutes for listening, 60 minutes for reading and writing, and 11-14 minutes time for speaking.
