ELC Santa Barbara
ELC - English Language Center Santa Barbara
Student Spotlight: Abdullah Alshareef December 3rd, 2015

Abdullah is a fun, outgoing 18 year old student from Saudi Arabia. We love the humor and optimism that he brings to ELC Santa Barbara!

1. What is your name?

My name is Abdullah but you can call me A.D. That’s my latest nickname. My former nickname is Adeboo. The French speaking students called me that since “Adeboo” is a French game for kids. I also go by “The Sun” but only during parties because that is when I really let my light shine!

2. Where are you from? What do you miss about your country?

I am from Jeddah City in Saudi Arabia. I love my city! I miss the food! And of course my family and friends. I have so many friends there! I have 50 friends and only two of them call me to see how I am doing in Santa Barbara. That is how you know who your true friends are. I will have to unfriend the rest when I go back home.

3. What do you like to do for fun?

I like to party haha. I enjoy hanging out with my friends. Back in Saudi Arabia we have many fun parties and lots of music! It’s really hot though! When we have a party we get tired too quickly because of the heat. When I play soccer in my country all of my clothes get drenched with sweat and that’s when I know that I have really played! I like swimming in the sea everyday because of the heat. I went on a fishing trip on a boat with my friends for one month which was fun but I don’t like to fish all the time because it requires too much patience. I also like playing Arcade games. It’s even more fun when I win the prizes!

4. Why did you decide to come to Santa Barbara?

I chose Santa Barbara because it’s safe, sunny, small and very beautiful. I like the people in Santa Barbara, the weather and ELC. I have surfed in the ocean for the first time in my life here and before I leave Santa Barbara I would love to skydive. It will be my chance to meet the sun face to face.

5. What is one cultural difference you have noticed while in Santa Barbara?

In my country if I want to make friends I have to throw a party first. When you throw a party people come to you. On the other hand, in Santa Barbara I make friends every day! At Starbucks, when I’m walking or even on the bus. It’s so much easier to make friends here.

6. What are you planning to do once your complete your courses at ELC?

I would like to go to university here in America. My dad is the one who will make the decision whether I will do my studies here or back home because he is the one who pays the bills. I want him to come here so that he can see how friendly people are. I have not decided what I will major in when I go to university but I’m interested in computer or electrical engineering. I don’t like math though!

7. What are your plans for the future?

I don’t worry about the future. I just care about having a happy life.

8. Then, what is the meaning of life?

That’s a good question… I just want people to love me. That’s it! I want to be good with people. It’s not about the money. Many people who are rich are not happy. I want to be happy.

9. Who do you look up to?

I like Steve Jobs because he makes cool and useful things for people. I can do the same thing he does, I just don’t have the time. Just kidding! His story really inspires me.

10. Do you have a funny story to share?

I have so many funny stories to share with you! I guess I’ll share this one: One day at ELC, I made a bet with my friend AB. He told me that if I asked a certain girl out on a date he would buy me coffee. I agreed since I’m not afraid to talk to the girls at school. I approached the girl and said, “Hi, my name is A.D.” She had not yet caught on to my new nickname so she just looked at me with a confused look and said, “A.D.?” I then proceeded to ask her if she had a boyfriend and she replied, “Yes I do. I’m sorry!” I responded, “Oh, it’s okay,” then I walked away.  AB was laughing at me the entire time. I still asked him for the coffee he promised me since I kept my end of the bet.

11. So, do you have a girlfriend?

No but I swear that I will find one! But not just any girl, she has to be a special girl. I will find her either here in Santa Barbara or back in Saudi Arabia.

12. Do you have any advice for prospective ELC students?

Come to ELC Santa Barbara! Challenge yourself to improve your English. Exercise more. Explore more. Make new friends. There are good people, happy people, and smiling people in Santa Barbara. Just go for it and be happy!
