Student Spotlight – Hiromasa Ogino July 2nd, 2018

Where were you born and raised? Give us a mental picture of the place.

In Japan, in a small town. There is not so many people, maybe 30,000. It is a nice place to live. There are many mountains. It is beautiful but not so convenient. There are no theaters and not that many bars or pubs. We must drive somewhere to go out. I like it in Los Angeles because it is more convenient.

What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?

I like to watch the soccer games. It is my hobby. On the weekend, every weekend, I watch soccer.

What is your profession? What do you like about it?

I was a student in Tokyo at a university. Tokyo is very convenient and interesting.

Why did you choose to study English in Los Angeles? Did you consider other options?

I first wanted to study in the United States and the reason I chose Los Angeles was simply because I thought Los Angeles was an interesting city. I wanted to make a lot of friends from all over the world so I thought that Los Angeles was the best place to make friends.

Have you noticed any differences between people here and people in Tokyo?

Yes. I was surprised when I went to the supermarket. In Japan they never say how are you. They just say the cost. They are so friendly in the supermarkets here. I like it.

What is your favorite food from Japan?

Of course sushi. I also love the dish with rice and green tea. We eat it after drinking too much. It is like fast food for American people. I heard that American people eat fast food after drinking too much. It is different in Japan. We eat ramen or rice with green tea.

What are you planning to do after ELC LA?

I am planning on going to UC Irvine. After I will go back to Japan and I have to get a job.
