Student Spotlight – Laila AlAwami! November 3rd, 2016

At ELC, the success of our students is our success too! Nothing makes us prouder than seeing our students go on to pursue higher education and follow their dreams! Laila is an ELC student born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She has a very eclectic sense of style and personality. She chose to study English in Los Angeles because she has family here. We sat down with Laila to learn more things about her.

Where were you born and raised?

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Why are you studying English in Los Angeles?

My brother lives here and I plan to get a master’s degree in financial engineering at either USC or UCLA. Or maybe another college in whichever town my brother moves to, but hopefully he can move to Berkeley. It would be nice to go to Berkeley.

Is this your first time in the US?:

No it isn’t. I visited the US two times before. The first time was with family for vacation when I was 6 years old.

What do you miss about your country?:

The food. Especially the food my mom makes. They do not taste the same here. I also miss my little cousins.

What do you do for fun? Hobbies?:

I don’t have hobbies, but I do like to watch television series. I currently like Game of Thrones.

Tips for people who want to learn English:

Watch movies and listen to good music/songs.

Favorite place in LA:

Americana in Glendale. I like to shop in the mall and hang out by the fountain.

Favorite restaurant in Westwood:

The Boiling Crab. But I like the one in KoreaTown better. I also like to go to Katsuya Sushi. I like seafood.

Favorite type of food:

I don’t have one. I like anything. I am not picky. But maybe crab.

Favorite moment in class at ELC:

When we say goodbye to other students and I get to be the photographer and take photos. We sometimes have little farewell parties and they are fun too.
