Student Spotlight Marianna Chiuminatto November 28th, 2017

Marianna Chiuminatto is a sweet, bright, and spunky teenager out of Italy! She spent six weeks with us at ELC Santa Barbara and quickly became the unofficial school spirit leader! She helped welcome new students, brought life to quiet moments, and is known for her outspoken and outgoing energy. Get to know more about her below!

Is this your first time in the US?

Yes, it is.

What were you surprised to learn about the US or Santa Barbara? Did you experience culture shock?

I learnt lots about American laws going with my conversation class to the courthouse. Lots of stereotypes that I had about other cultures, such as Switzerland and Saudi Arabia, were also broken during all the moments when we spoke about them in conversation classes.

What do you miss about your country?

The food because here in America people are used to eating such big portions of unhealthy food.

What do you do for fun?

Going to the beach, visiting other cities with California Explorer or with my family, but the best moment was the road trip with the other students of ELC.

What are your hobbies?

I love going out with my friends, listening to music, playing the piano, and going swimming.

Do you have any tips for people who want to learn English?

They have to speak just English also when they are not in class and everyone has to try to use the vocabulary and the grammar rules that they learnt in classes.

What is your favorite place in Santa Barbara?

West Beach because over there after school. You can relax or you can play beach volleyball with the other students.

What are your favorite moments in class at ELC?

Conversation class because everyone speaks about his own lifestyle in his own country and so you can learn lots of thoughts about other parts of the world (including the USA).

What are your plans after ELC?

Going back to Italy and continuing to study for high school.
