Student Spotlight – Marlies Drmola June 7th, 2018

Marlies is from Austria, and studied at ELC Santa Barbara for eight weeks in our Semi-Intensive English Course. Marlies was always very active and eager to learn. In fact, she learned more about Santa Barbara then most of the locals. While in Santa Barbara she enjoyed touring the wineries and exploring the beautiful outdoors.

Is this your first time in the US?

No, It’s the 3rd time. First time out here was to New York for vacation. The second time was for a round trip from Utah, Arizona and California. My favorite parts were the National parks and Las Vegas.

What were you surprised to learn about the US or Santa Barbara? Did you experience culture shock?

I was surprised to learn that fees for housing are so high.

What do you miss about your country?

Apart form my family: nothing.

What do you do for fun?

Go to the gym, go to zumba, discover Santa Barbara by bike or foot, do wine-tastings, visit the theater, visit the piano bar, hiking and playing beach volleyball.

What are your hobbies?

Sports, reading and wines. My favorite in Santa Barbara we’re the Urban Wine Tour (I have a membership card) and Grassini.

Do you have tips for people who want to learn English?

Talk with Americans as often as possible.

What is your favorite place in Santa Barbara?

I can’t say there are many places in Santa Barbara I really like.

What are your favorite moments in class at ELC?

My favorite moments are the moments when all students discuss an interesting topic. My favorite topic was when we discussed Money.

What are your plans after ELC?

Go back to work at Human Resources.
