Paulo and Amilcar are cousins from the city of Benguela in Angola. They started attending ELC in January and have been really enjoying the snowy winter since they do not get this kind of weather back home. Paulo (18) is studying for the TOEFL exam and Amilcar (17) is taking the Intensive English Course. Throughout our conversation they expressed themselves as typical teenage boys who like to play video games and hang out with their friends, but when asked about their plans for the future, they surprised me with their mature and thoughtful responses. Paulo wants to study Mechanical Engineering at a university in Boston, while Amilcar aspires to become the CEO of his own company after he acquires his business degree. We wish them all the best in their future studies!
Paulo: My brother is in Boston, he studies at Boston University so I followed him here. We live together in an apartment. Boston is a great city and I want to attend university here eventually.
Amilcar: I enjoy the classes at ELC, and I think all the teachers are great. We became good friends with our classmates and we like to go out dancing together.
We did not attend many activities because the weather was not good, but we heard there will be ELC soccer games when it gets warmer, so we are looking forward to doing that. We are going to the Red Sox game next week and we are very excited!
Paulo: I like dancing and playing basketball, especially NBA video games.
Amilcar: I play soccer and listen to rap music.
Bruh. Not bro…. Bruh.
Both: Pizza
Paulo: I prefer pizza from Domino’s and my favorite is Italian sausage topping.
Amilcar: I think Cappy Pizza is the best. I keep a picture of it in my phone.
Make good friends because they are the people you spend the most time with. There is always something fun to do when you have friends to do it together.
Paulo: I want to study Mechanical Engineering, but not at BU because my brother is there already.
Amilcar: I will study business and become the CEO of my own company, but I’m not sure what business.
