Sergey is from Russia, and studied at ELC Los Angeles for two weeks in our Intensive 30 Course. His goal was to learn “American English” along with idioms and business English. He is very hard working and showed a lot of dedication. Also, Sergey competed in a chess competition at the Los Angeles Chess Club 2018. He has not competed in a chess match for over 20 years.
What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?
Sergey enjoys playing tennis, chess, reading books, and doing CrossFit. He likes CrossFit because he finds it is important for his stamina, self-motivation, and for the sense of accomplishment. He has been practicing CrossFit for 2 years. He is 40 but CrossFit makes him feel 18 again.
What is your profession? What do you like about it?
Sergey is a businessman. He works for an engineering company that makes high-quality steel-cutting knives. He likes his job because it allows him to develop his creativity and the projects he works with make him feel purposeful because he is able to see an outcome of the product ideas he develops. Learning English is important to him because of his company. He wishes to move the company to the US someday, thus, he wants to learn American Business.
Tell us about your family, do you have kids? Siblings? Do they live close to you?
He has an 8-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter. He will be going to go see his son for the holidays. After his business trips, Sergey usually lives with his son. His son keeps himself busy with school and taking extracurricular classes such as art, chess, swimming, and English. His daughter lives with her mother and sees her every so often. Sergey loves his family dearly and works hard for them.
What do you miss most about your country?
Besides his family, Sergey misses his CrossFit team. He misses working out with them, competing against them, and his gym that he has got accustomed to. He also misses the Russian sauna. He gets smacked with a bath broom made of seaweed, which is supposed to be good for skin, detoxification, and respiratory system.
Why did you choose to study at ELC? Did you consider other options?
Sergey has a partner in the US in which he does business with. He believes that if you want to enhance your English level, America is the place to do that, specifically in New York or Los Angeles. He hears many accents and likes how Los Angeles is melting pot. He looks forward to continuing to enhance and learn more “American English”.
Favorite Activity at ELC?
He has a lot of great memories with his teachers, Max and Scott, who have been an inspiration to his career. He thanks them for passing down their knowledge to him and for enhancing his level. He sees Max’s passion for teaching and appreciates his teaching methods.
