Student Spotlight: Ulrike Disler February 18th, 2016

Ulrike Disler has been studying at ELC Los Angeles for the past two weeks, and she’s been loving it! This is not her first time in LA. She’s been here before, and says that this will probably not be her last time here. As a life coach, Ulrike wants to expand her business by being able to communicate more effectively to English-speaking clients. What better way to brush up on English than studying it in one of your favorite cities? Read on to find out more about Ulrike, and her experience at ELC.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Berlin and grew up there. About ten years ago I moved to Zurich, Switzerland. Sometimes in your life, you feel like you need a change, and that is why I moved to Switzerland.

Why are you studying English?

I am a life coach and a supervisor, and have some requests from English clients. I want to improve my English so that I can work with them.

How did you get into life coaching?

I worked on the board of some companies as a CEO for many years and needed a change. I got a degree in coaching and education and began working as a life coach. My clients are sometimes private, individual clients, and I also work with companies in workplace development.

Why did you choose to study in Los Angeles?

I love LA! There are three cities in the world that I love: Zurich, Berlin and Los Angeles. The first time I visited LA was nine years ago with two friends and we had such a good time. I really like the weather.. it always feels like summer.

Where’s your favorite place in LA?

Malibu. I love the park there and there’s a small area with a lot of shops. It’s very nice.

What were you surprised to learn about Los Angeles?

I was surprised that the environment was so casual. When you think about LA, and what you see in the movies is all the famous people. But the environment is actually casual and comfortable.

What do you do for fun?

About three years ago, I started painting. I paint whatever is on my mind. An abstract style.

What’s your favorite phone application?

My favorite phone application is my Boa Lingua Guide; it’s my travel agency. And my dictionary!

What is your guilty pleasure?

American food! During the super bowl, my host mom made us lots of food. Sandwiches, chips, chocolate…

What are your tips for people who want to learn English?

Come to ELC! I really like the teaching style. I think it’s the perfect way to learn English. Grammar class is very important. Teacher Carmen has a great style. In the mornings after grammar class, I feel accomplished knowing that I learned something. It’s easy to forget grammar rules when you are not studying in a classroom setting.
