Overview

The ELC Summer Junior Program in Boston gives students the unique opportunity to live and study English in state-of-the-art facilities, located in the heart of Boston. During July and August, students enrolled in our Summer Junior Program in Boston will live in a university dormitory. Summer Junior Program students will take English classes in the mornings and be able to choose one of four activity programs in the afternoon: our Classic Program, University Explorer Program, Sports Explorer Program, or STEM Explorer Program. On the weekends, students will be able to participate in optional Saturday activities and an included full-day excursion on Sunday.

Students live on campus in Boston University dormitories with 24-hour supervision.

(Saturday to Saturday, minimum 1-week enrollment)

Ages: 11 - 13 and 14 - 17 years old

Morning Course:
Semi-Intensive English Course or Entrepreneurship Course Two 40-minute lessons and two 60-minute lessons per day (total hours 16.67 hours per week)

Meals: 18 meals per week (full-board Monday - Friday, half-board Saturday, breakfast only Sunday)

Accommodation: Boston University dormitory* (The Towers) or day student (self-arranged accommodation)

Occupancy: Doubles and triples

Airport transfer: Included in the transportation fee, valid for Saturday arrivals and departures between 9am - 9pm

Activities: Afternoon activities Monday-Friday, full-day excursions each Sunday (Optional activities offered evenings and Saturdays)

Classic Programs: Consists of a mix of cultural, sports, sightseeing and shopping activities

University Explorer Program: Includes College Readiness Workshop, university campus tours, and academic skills workshops

Sports Explorer Program: Play outdoors sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball and football, and visit local sporting venues

STEM Explorer Program: Get hands-on experience with science and technology through hands-on workshops, lab visits, and seminars

ABOUT OUR BOSTON LOCATION

  • Traditional college campus located a short walk from the oldest and most famous ballpark in America - Fenway Park

ACCOMMODATION at BOSTON UNIVERSITY

ELC offers students in our Summer Junior Program in Boston the opportunity to live on campus in a Boston University dormitory. Students also have the option to participate in our program as a day student if they are not in need of accommodation.

Most students in our Summer Junior Program in Boston stay on campus in dormitory accommodation. The Boston University* dormitory has the following features:
  • Shared occupancy, full-board (half-board on Saturday and breakfast only on Sunday
  • Rooms are furnished with beds, desks, chairs and closets
  • Bathrooms are shared by 4-6 students
  • Linens and bath towels included and refreshed weekly. Students can receive fresh linens upon request
  • Bathrooms and common areas cleaned frequently
  • Air-conditioned
  • Laundry facilities located in the dormitory (approximately $1.75 per wash, $1.75 per dry)

Students can register without accommodation and meals as Day Students. Day students are students who stay with family or family friends while they participate in the Summer Junior Program. Day students can choose to join our Summer Junior Program and take morning courses only or morning courses and activities only. A student in our morning courses only program will need to arrive on campus by 8:30AM Monday through Friday to join their Morning Courses and be picked up on campus after their morning courses at 1PM. The student is responsible for their own transportation. A student in our morning courses and activities program will need to arrive on campus by 8:30AM Monday through Friday and depart campus by 6pm, once afternoon activities are completed. Students who chose to participate in both morning courses and activities can also participate in optional Saturday activities and our Sunday excursions.

MORNING COURSES

Students participate in Morning Courses Monday-Friday. Morning Courses are compulsory and are included in the Junior Program package. Morning Courses do not occur on Saturday or Sundays.

ACTIVITIES PROGRAMS & EXCURSIONS

Junior Program students participate in activities Monday-Friday after their courses. Afternoon activities are compulsory and are included in the Summer Junior Program package. Evening and Saturday activities are always optional and offered to all students. ELC always offers a combination of free and low-cost evening and Saturday activities. Please refer to the sample calendar for sample activities.

Afternoon Activities Program

Students in our Summer Junior Program in Boston may choose from four different Activities Programs for their afternoon activity at no additional cost. Students may choose up to one program each week. Students must choose their selection at enrollment to ensure availability.

Evening Activities

  • Students enrolled in the Junior Program have the opportunity of joining optional evening activities during their program.
  • ELC offers a combination of free and low-cost evening activities, which are determined on campus based on students' interests.

  • Examples of Evening Activities include:

  • Baseball game (Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park)
  • Dance parties
  • Shopping trips
  • Talent shows
  • Concerts
  • Tie Dye T-Shirts
  • Movie nights
  • Sports on campus (basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, etc.)

  • **Some optional evening activities may have fees associated with participation**

Saturday Activities

  • Students enrolled in the Junior Program have the option of joining optional Saturday excursions during their stay.
  • Students who do not wish to participate in optional Saturday activities can enjoy spending time with other ELC students and staff on campus.
  • Some optional Saturday activities, such as the New York City Daytrip, should be reserved in advance during the registration process to ensure availability.

MORNING COURSES

SEMI-INTENSIVE ENGLISH COURSE

Students studying in our Semi-Intensive English Course will learn the rules of grammar through communicative teaching methods. Through speaking and writing, students will improve their abilities and pronunciation, as well as practice listening to and understanding native speakers.

  • Levels: Beginner to Proficiency. Up to 12 Levels. ELC's multi-level placement ensures that students are placed in the correct level for Grammar and Communication Skills.
  • Lessons (per week): 20 lessons per week (16.67 instruction hours per week)
  • Lesson Duration: Two 40-minute lessons and two 60-minute lessons per day from 9am-12:45pm
  • Start Date: Course starts on the Monday following the Saturday program start date. Start any Saturday during the program dates. Minimum one week.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE

ELC offers high-intermediate and advanced junior students the option to join a two-week Entrepreneurship Course. In lieu of English language classes in the morning, high-intermediate and advanced students, have the option to join a content-based leadership and entrepreneurship course. During the afternoon, students will participate in one of the three afternoon activities offered at their campus including Classic, University Explorer, or a specialized explorer program. The available start dates for the Entrepreneurship Course will be June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, and July 22. This course is offered exclusively to high-level students who no longer require daily instruction in English language skills. Students will take a placement test before they register to determine if they meet the level requirement to participate in this course.

  • Levels: High-Intermediate to Advanced. Student must pass a pre-test to enroll.
  • Lessons (per week): 20 lessons per week (16.67 instruction hours per week)
  • Lesson Duration: Two 40-minute lessons and two 60-minute lessons per day from 9am-12:45pm
  • Start Date: Start dates every Saturday between June 24 - July 22. This is a two week maximum course. Students may take Semi-Intensive English Course before or after.

University Explorer Program

University Explorers will take college preparation classes that cover the SAT and TOEFL tests, as well as study skills and financial aid available to international students. In addition, they will visit local universities where they will participate in tours and information sessions. They will also work on essay writing.

Sports Explorer Program
